One Short Ear

Jen said that maybe I should explain to my new friends why one of my ears looks funny in some pictures. See when I was about two months old I got into a fight with a ferocious squirrel. He got my ear, but I got his life...just kidding. When I met Jen and Frank I had already been to the V-E-T and been fixed and had my shots. That crazy V-E-T also clipped one of my ears. He said its because I was feral and anyone else that found me would see my ear and know that I had already been fixed. Jen called my grandhuman who used to work for a V-E-T and she said she'd never heard of such a thing. But the deed was done. When I came to live here my little clipped ear was infected. Jen and Frank had to put medicine on it to make it better. It doesn't bother me now...actually I think it gives me character.

  1. We've heard that they will "tip" an ear of a feral cat once its been fixed so that others will know that. We think your short ear gives you character, Tuck! And we're happy you are feral no more!

  2. We love your tipped ear. Last summer our Mom raised a feral family and when she caught them to get them "taken care of" (so she said) and get some shots; all of them came back with little ear tips! It is adorable... and it is very special.

  3. We think your tipped ear is speshull too - wear it with pride since you are a gorjuss former feral.

  4. We've heard of feral cats having a notch cut in their ear for the reason you explained, but only when the kitty is returned to the wild. Don't worry, you look very handsome:)

  5. Our friend Shadow is also eartipped. She comes inside to her other humans' house (our across-the-street neighbors) sometimes, but eats at our food bowl as well. We got Dot fixed and eartipped as well. Some places eartip on the left, some on the right, some notch, and some tattoo. What matters is that it's done so that animal control knows to leave you alone and that you've been taken care of.

  8. Sorry your ear got infected. You got good nurses now! You'll heal up just fine. I am a vet tech and here's a link on eartipping for you and your kitty friends to learn more.

We think your ear is quite jaunty looking and gives you a special flair!

  9. We think your little clipped ear is so cute! Here in Chicago that is what they do to all the ferals too.

  10. Hey Tuck,
We forgot to comment about your ear. Yes, for Feral cats in Iowa, they also clip the ear tip. It's especially useful when trapping feral cats for the neuter/spay program. If the ear is clipped, they just release the cat. No need to take it to the vet. Or if you see a cat roaming with the ear clipped, you also know it's been neutered, etc.
